Quilts for Bendigo Part 3

Here's the 18 quilts a friend is taking over to Bendigo for the fire victims. Luckily I'm a better quilter than photographer. I was rushing to get photos taken and the quilts delivered. I had room in one of the boxes so I managed to get the last quilt put together. As you can see I've had a bit of practice with the QAYG blocks as I've made all these QAYG quilts since Dec. There were another couple of them as well but they were donated before the bushfire. The purple quilt was a set of donated blocks which someone had used for very creative machine quilting. The mauve quilt was a donated top which I quilted and the horizontal strips quilt was donated as a partly quilted top which I finished.

Quilts for Bendigo Part 2

The red string quilt with the heart shaped centre was a top donated by Pam C from Alexandra, Vic. The rest were all string pieced QAYG quilts or scrappy squares quilts I made since Dec.

Quilts for Bendigo Part 1

The top quilt was a donated top and the fan quilt was a set of donated blocks. The string quilt was a donated top by Pam C from Alexandra, Vic and the next top is a collection of cheater panels and donated blocks I combined into a quilt. The quilt with green borders was a set of donated blocks and the last quilt was a set of animal related orphan blocks which were donated by various quilters. I love finishing off other people's UFOs.

Some of the First Quilts Delivered

These are the first of our beautiful quilts delivered by Christina this week.

They are for two families, the children are aged 6 to 10, three girls and one boy. Both families lost everything one escaping just in time...The other family had just moved into the home the day before and was away when the fire took hold... I am asking for two QS quilts to go to the parents of these children...

They were in the Mudgegonga area on Saturday night that is where their homes are, at the moment they are being housed by friends. they were burnt by the fire that started in Beechworth came down through Stanley and jumped the road in Mudgegonga and travelled on to Rosewhite and headed our way fortunately for us the wind changed.

So already someone has been blessed with our quilts and I've heard from quite a few quilters who are getting their sewing groups involved with making QAYG blocks.
Two lovely ladies have volunteered to collect quilts in Melbourne and transport them to either Christina or myself and we really appreciate all the offers of help we've had from interstate and overseas.

First Post

As you know the State of Victoria has been severely affected by bushfires on Saturday Feb 7th and subsequent days. It's very hard to put into words the devastation experienced as whole towns were wiped from existence. The death toll stands at 181 so far and may rise to 300 and over 1,000 homes were destroyed and approximately 5,000 were left homeless. The damage is widespread and all Australians and overseas friends are stunned at the tragic images.
Many are generously donating money and goods and we have been helped by stories from other people who have experienced fires wiping out their homes, as they describe what types of aupport will be needed in the coming months.
In an effort to provide support and help to replace some of the precious items they have now lost we are attempting to make a quilt for all those who have been affected by this destruction. Making and donating 5,000 quilts will be a herculian effort but we know that there are many groups who are participating at a local level. We have started a blog to chart our progress and give others the opportunity to get the word out about their wonderful efforts . We also would like to be able to show photos of completed quilts and give an idea of the numbers of quilts which have been donated and which parts of the State have received them.
This will be a long-term project and Christina and I appreciate all the support we have received so far.
